Engineering insight · Entrepreneurial impact

Turn research and emerging technologies into promising ventures, fundable opportunities and industry-ready concepts.

Applied Futures Lab helps organisations assess whether a technology is genuinely better, where it can be applied, whether the market will adopt it, what it will cost, and what needs to be built next.

Our pathway
Assess

Technology, innovation level and readiness.

Apply

Use cases, sectors and real customer needs.

Compare

Cost, performance, scale and manufacturability.

Model

Market, adoption, risk, fixed and variable cost, and ROI.

Prepare

Prototype, testing, TRL 2–3, investors and grants.

Five work packages

Start with a focused assessment or move toward prototype and funding readiness.

Work package 1 Assess

Technology Advantage Assessment

Assess a technology, its innovation and its competitive advantage versus existing alternatives.

  • Technology and readiness assessment
  • Cost, performance and scale comparison
  • Manufacturability and implementation review
  • Competitive advantage summary
Work package 2 Apply

Research-to-Application Mapping

Translate research outcomes into real-life applications and value-creating use cases.

  • Research outcome review
  • Application and sector mapping
  • Potential customer and use-case logic
  • Advantage versus what already exists
Work package 4 Build

Prototype-Ready Build Pack

Combine the assessment, application and market work into a prototype-ready plan.

  • Prototype scope and requirements
  • Build route, materials and supplier assumptions
  • Testing and validation plan
  • Costed prototype roadmap
Work package 5 Fund

TRL 2–3 & Funding Readiness

Move the concept toward TRL 2–3 and prepare it for investors, public grants or strategic partners.

  • TRL 2–3 evidence and development plan
  • Investor narrative and opportunity memo
  • Public grant application content
  • Partner, pilot and funding roadmap

Technical expertise

We connect technical feasibility with business value.

Our team brings technical expertise across systems engineering, sensors, IoT, artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, digital platforms, electrical and electronics systems, energy systems, control systems, data collection and analytics, digital twins, prototype instrumentation, manufacturing readiness, test and validation planning, requirements definition, risk assessment, cost modelling and TRL roadmapping.

This allows us to assess not only whether a technology is commercially attractive, but also how it could be engineered, measured, tested, automated, connected, scaled and validated in real-world environments.
